The
fascinating Shekhawati region is just not another
destination in Rajasthan. It is a place that offers
exquisitely painted havelis that have given it an
objective - The Open Air Art Gallery. In this
region, wonderful wall paintings adorn in profusion
the buildings constructed by the merchants.
Initially, the region had a blank monochromatic look
but with subsequent historical and social
developments, it has blossomed into a colorful
profusion of art and life.
The Painted Havelis
Havelis in this region reflect a unique
architectural style. They are built around the
courtyard that ensures safety of the women and
protection from the heat. The typical havelis in
Shekhawati consisted of two courtyards dedicated to
men and women separately.
Places That Adorn The Region
Nawalgarh
Founded in 1737 by Nawal Singh it offer some of the
best preserved havelis and finest frescoes in
Shekhawati
Worth seeing : Aath havelis (eight havelis)
complex, Murarka haveli, Bansidhar Bhagat haveli,
Chokhani haveli, Gangamai temple and Podar school,
the only haveli in the whole Shekhawati which has
been restored by its owner….
Dundlod
A tiny village around 8 km from Nawalgarh, it dates
back to 1750. Its fort, now converted into a hotel,
reflect the unique architectural style of the
ancient past.
Worth seeing : Chhatri of Ram Dutt Goenka and
its adjacent well. The havelis of Goenka family are
nowadays closed and it is difficult to get the keys.
Mandawa
Founded in the 18th century, it is the town, which
has successfully retained its medieval charm through
the ages.
Worth seeing : Goenka Haveli, Nand Lal
Murmuria Haveli, Chokhani Haveli, Gulab Rai Ladia
Haveli, Bansidhar Newatia Haveli.
